IPTV —Internet Protocol Television — is the technical term for streaming TV services via the Internet. The heart of its delivery mechanism is the IP data network, such as LAN or the public Internet. Which is completely different than traditional terrestrial, satellite and cable television formats.
IPTV can take on three formats:
- Live IPTV, which allows you to watch sporting events or shows by streaming them live to your mobile or TV, with or without interactivity;
- Video on Demand (VOD), which means you get to see a video whenever you select it; or
- Time-shifted television — or ‘catch-up’ TV — is used when want to watch a show you missed when it originally ran. Example include BBC’s iPlayer, ITV Hub, and All 4. The difference between this and VOD media is that time-shifted content has a shelf life.
When choosing your IPTV solution, it’s important that you consider only those that will provide reliable and secure delivery of video channels where the network performance and security is managed. This will ensure the resulting experience is professional.
